Privacy Policy for Synoptic Weather

Synoptic Weather shows rain on a map and the forecast for any place. It does not require an account, does not show ads and does not track you.

What stays on your device

• The last place you looked at, so the app reopens there, and the place you pick for each widget.

These are stored only on your device and are never sent to us. Uninstalling the app removes them.

What is sent to our server

To show the weather, the app sends requests to our own server, which we run at Hetzner Online. Each request contains only what is needed to answer it:

• Forecast requests — the coordinates of the place you look at, rounded to about 1 km. If you allow location access, this includes your approximate location, for the forecast where you are and in the widget.
• Rain map requests — the area of the map on screen.
• Place search — the text you type.

Like any web server, ours logs the IP address, time and address of each request for operation and security. We keep these logs for a limited period, do not use them to build profiles, and do not sell or share them.

Weather data comes from Open-Meteo, which our server queries on your behalf. To answer a place search, our server forwards the search text (without your IP address) to the Open-Meteo geocoding service. Neither receives information about you.

What your device sends directly to third parties

• OpenStreetMap tile servers (tile.openstreetmap.org) — when you view the map, your device requests map images for the area shown, which reveals your IP address and that area. See the OSMF Privacy Policy.
• The phone's built-in geocoder — to name the place you are at or tapped (for example "Tel Aviv-Yafo"), the app asks the geocoder built into the phone, which sends those coordinates to Apple on iPhone or to Google on Android. See Apple's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy.

What we do not do

• We do not show ads.
• We do not use analytics, advertising or crash-reporting SDKs.
• We do not use advertising identifiers or track you across apps and websites.
• We do not sell or share data with data brokers.
• We do not require sign-in or collect contact details.

Permissions

• Location (while using the app) — optional. Used to open on the forecast where you are and for the widget. If you deny it, you can search for a place or tap the map instead.
• Internet — required to fetch the forecast, the rain map and map images.

Children

Synoptic Weather is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Your rights

Because the app has no accounts, we hold no profile about you. Server logs are deleted on a rolling basis. For any question or request under the GDPR, the Israeli Privacy Protection Law or other laws, email us at the address above.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The effective date above changes when we do, and material changes come with a new app release.
